Heather_Moyer_FixNationVolunteerName: Heather Moyer

About: I’m an attorney from Amish Country Pennsylvania, and I moved to Los Angeles just over a year ago with my two rescue cats. In the past year, three strays in my neighborhood decided that I should be their forever momma, and I gladly complied.

City and neighborhood: Glassell Park, Los Angeles but originally from Lancaster, PA. Years volunteering at FixNation: A little over one year

What brought you to want to volunteer for FixNation: Volunteering is very important to me, so as soon as I moved to Los Angeles, I began looking for a place to volunteer. Around the same time, I noticed kittens and strays congregating in a neighbor’s yard. As I was watching the cats with concern, another neighbor told me about a place in Burbank where you can drop off cats in the morning, they will fix the cats, and then you pick the cats up in the afternoon to bring home. He wasn’t sure of the name. I went home and found FixNation with an internet search. Through the FN website, I learned about TNR and the plight of homeless cats in LA. The misfortune of so, so many precious creatures with no voices to defend or help themselves broke my heart and stirred something deep inside me that I had to get involved.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering at FixNation: When I volunteer in the clinic my favorite thing is seeing all of the little (and sometimes not so little) patients. I always talk to them and tell them they are beautiful, smart, and loved. To me, they are all beautiful no matter what they may look like. I feel so good to see each one go out the door, knowing that cat’s life just improved immensely and thinking about all of the future lives that have been prevented from enduring the suffering of living on the streets. I’ve also met some amazing friends through FN. My favorite thing about doing outreach events for FN is spreading the word about TNR and the resources available in LA. Even if the person I talk to doesn’t need TNR services at the time, he/she learns what to do to help community cats and can spread the word to friends and family (or neighbors, as was my case). It is the best feeling when someone stops by our table and learns about TNR for the first time and leaves excited to get started! I’ve seen a lot of light bulbs turn on in people and faces light up, and to me, that is so rewarding.
