A Short History
TNR programs have been established in many cities and towns all across America in recent years. In Los Angeles, Best Friends Catnippers is one such group, founded in 1999 by the husband and wife team of Mark Dodge and Karn Myers. Best Friends Catnippers is a non-profit organization operating under the wing of Best Friends Animal Society, and conducts bi-monthly, high volume spay/neuter clinics offering free sterilization services for homeless, feral and stray cats. Staffed purely by volunteers including volunteer vets and vet techs, Catnippers has been responsible for fixing over 14,000 homeless cats since 2000.
With the success of Catnippers being significant and notable, Mark and Karn felt that with a permanent, full-time facility, many more cats throughout Los Angeles could be helped, thus making an even greater difference in our community and in the lives of these homeless animals. So in 2006, they secured additional grant funding from PetSmart Charities, the Found Animals Foundation, Best Friends Animal Society, the Angela Collier Foundation, plus several private donors, in order to launch the very first free, full-time spay-neuter facility within Los Angeles — FixNation, Inc.
FixNation officially opened its doors to the public on July 16, 2007, and is dedicated to serving feral cat caregivers and implementing TNR county-wide. FixNation is a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. FixNation is open five days a week, Monday through Friday, and the clinic is located just west of the Burbank airport.
Additionally, Best Friends Catnippers continues to conduct free, bi-monthly spay/neuter clinics, which are now held at FixNation’s facility one Sunday every other month.
