(.zip via Google Drive) One of this year’s most innovative design events, Architects for Animals® “Giving Shelter” exhibit, returned to the HermanMiller Showroom in Culver City on Thursday, October 19. The sold-out event benefits the LA-based non-profit FixNation, which provides free spay/neuter services for homeless cats (stray, abandoned and feral felines). LA’s top architects and designers were invited to design, build and donate functional and one-of-a-kind outdoor dwellings for cats. The shelters were displayed at a cocktail reception attended by the public, VIPs and media representatives. Also on [...]

Dodging the Blues by Carl Verheyen

Carl recently shared with FixNation, "Sometime in March I was writing music for an upcoming album that will be my personal take on the blues.  Just before Mark passed away I was thinking about my friend, and when I picked up my guitar a minor key piece poured out of me. I called it 'Dodging the Blues,' dedicated to Mark Dodge." This song will be featured on Carl's upcoming blues album. Click below to hear "Dodging the Blues."

Beloved Vet Bids Adieu to FixNation

Change is inevitable, as it’s been said. But that’s little comfort to the FixNation family as we grapple with the departure of Derek Turner, an exceptional and truly devoted veterinarian who recently hung up his surgical scrubs for good. Just how devoted was he? Dr. Turner spayed, neutered and performed emergency surgery on thousands of feral cats at FixNation’s clinic, commuting from New Mexico to Los Angeles two weeks out of every month…for seven years. That’s one heck of a drive, even by Los Angeles standards. Why do it? “I was impressed with the quality of care that FixNation offered [...]

Contest Winner: Beloved Niñita (Small Girl)

Congratulations to Victoria Rosales who won a free outdoor shelter for their colony cats and a bottle of Feral Flower Essence from FixNation board member Jackson Galaxy's Spirit Essences line through FixNation’s National Feral Cat Day story competition! I was born in a family of dog people. It was hard since at an early age I discovered cats were my best friends and companions. My mother’s preference was Chihuahuas. I liked all kind of cats. I didn’t care if they were big, small, tall, or fat. The color of yellow, brown or black didn’t matter either. When I grew up I [...]

Dia de los Muertos 2012 at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

For the third consecutive year, FixNation was invited to participate in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 27. Ever since we began working with the cemetery to fix their resident cat colony, we have been the only non-profit to have an altar at this increasingly popular event.  With an estimated 20,000 visitors, this year’s celebration smashed previous attendance records, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the amount of visitors we had. Our dedicated volunteers put in long hours through unseasonably blazing sunshine and damp graveyard nights to [...]

Nancy Carr, Our Never To Be Forgotten Angel

by Mark Dodge It is with tearful sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Nancy Carr, a dear friend and a member of FixNation’s Board of Directors.  At the youthful age of 50, Nancy died on February 18, 2011, from complications arising from a long bout with brain cancer. Karn and I first met Nancy through her support of Dona Baker’s Feral Cat Caretakers Coalition several years ago, developing from the outset a friendship bond with her and her husband, Ronnie.  A genuine lover of cats and strong supporter of TNR, we were struck by her charm, style, grace, intelligence, [...]
