2014 in Review

It’s important to us that you know how we’re doing. You – our friends, our supporters, our fellow cat aficionados – you are the backbone of FixNation. We are proud to share with you a report on last year’s efforts, and to renew our commitment to helping even more cats this year. Please review the following information at your leisure.

In 2014, we helped 16,654 animals, including our Saturday Vaccine and Microchip Clinic clients (dogs and cats) and any cats that were too sick for surgery. We performed almost 14,000 spay and neuter surgeries, and 68% of these spay/neuter surgeries were on feral cats.

As for Community Outreach, we had quite a busy year! FixNation staff delivered our Trap Training session to hundreds of new volunteers and performed outreach in the immediate community surrounding FixNation. Volunteers generously gave of their time and efforts helping canvass for PetSmart’s “Beat The Heat” and “Happy Neuter Year,” two of our largest community campaigns. We were also invited to participate at the Carl Terzian networking meeting, the San Fernando Valley Animal Welfare Community Summit 2014, the Cat Club filming, HSUS/Pets For Life gathering, and the Day of the Dead event. (See photos of our great events by clicking here.) Wonderful partnerships developed with local businesses and other animal welfare related organizations such as Pussy & Pooch, a HSUS/PS Webinar presentation, and the Angel Brewery fundraiser. That’s a lot of activity, but as always, we were more than glad to show up for all events.

Furthermore, we fielded inquiries from out of state and country, empowering individuals and organizations with information on community cats. Additionally, we started a community outreach program at the North Central Shelter in Los Angeles in order to help support a grant-funded spay/neuter project for community cats in the area. We have begun transporting cats to the clinic as a result of a van that was donated to us.

There were many noteworthy events and highlights from the year as well! Actress, Morgan Fairchild agreed to be a spokesperson for FixNation. The Architects for Animals Event – a heavily promoted, 1-night event, where local architectural firms designed and built their own version of an outdoor shelter for cats – fundraised for us. The designs were then put on display at the event for attendees to vote for their favorite, and all those innovative shelters were donated to us at the end of the show! The first Los Angeles Architects for Animals event took place, and was a major success.

We continued spreading our name by participating in a discussion at Alley Cat Allies Meet & Greet for Community Awareness in order to help patrons get to know their community resources regarding community cats. The discussion included best practices for TNR, colony care, and neighborhood support. Plus, we supported Kitten Palooza with spcaLA by providing spay/neuter services for event cats, and attended organizational management training at the Humane Alliance of North Carolina clinic to keep up with the latest best practices for operation of our clinic. We also shared our knowledge in working with community cats, which helps to improve training for other organizations and forge deeper relationships.

After that, we attended the North American Spay Neuter Conference to gain further knowledge and enhance our current and future operations. We were able to network with existing partners, and meet with other high volume spay/neuter organizations and programs to discuss operations and share ideas. We then attended Heaven On Earth: Heroes Among Us in order to honor the efforts Heaven On Earth makes to support cats, and then joined in the Los Angeles Feline Film Festival fun where we had an information booth that provided information on TNR, colony care, volunteerism, and tame/pet cat spay/neuter services.

Rounding up the end of the year, we were lucky enough to be the beneficiaries of the Vice is Nice annual fundraiser in support of community cats. In other news, our founders were honored with the Pioneer Award at the 2nd Annual SNPLA Gala where FixNation Board Member, Jackson Galaxy, presented the award, making it extra special. Lastly, the holidays were celebrated with Jay Leno’s “Kitten Café,” a Christmas Party at Jay Leno’s garage, which we organized. As a longtime supporter, he had helping cats in mind and we were more than happy to help make his vision come true.

We are moving forward in achieving success in pursuit of our mission: bringing about the day of no more homeless cats by implementing TNR far and wide. We know this requires a variety of community outreach efforts, educating the public about animal welfare, collaborating with other like-minded nonprofits, improving our efficiency, and simply promoting cat love any way we can. Below please take a peek at the notable press we had for the year, links included!

In the works for this year, FixNation is further developing its partnership with Humane Society of the United State’s Pets For Life program. We’re also thrilled to be the chosen beneficiary for CatConLA, a Comic-Con style event but for cat lovers. This and more is in the works; there is plenty of exciting stuff ahead, tailored to benefit cats everywhere. We thank you for being part of our team, and we hope we did you proud in 2014. Here’s to a lot more we can do together for cats in 2015!
