Hi, my name is Gail Colby. I used to work on a dead-end street in a commercial district in Van Nuys, next to a large TV studio, surrounded by a residential area.
At first, I started seeing cats in the parking lot, mostly sick and dying. I decided that I could do something to help them, even if it was to just prevent starvation. I started to put food out whenever I saw a cat. Initially, I got some resistance from people I worked with, so I started to feed the cats in a corner where no one would see me. Gradually, I saw more and more cats, so I set up a dedicated feeding station. I then realized that water was at least as important as food, because I saw the cats drinking from toxic puddles in the parking lot. After feeding for several months, I understood I had to do more than just feed the cats, as I began to see pregnant females. I felt determined to stop the cycle. I got permission and support – I was told “JUST DO IT” from the top of my company, which was important as the property is gated and locked after hours, and I began trapping the cats for T-N-R.
I had heard about Fix Nation through a shelter I volunteered at. FixNation is the most incredible place. These people who work and volunteer here are the answer to helping this problem of feral cats in LA. I was trained in trapping and T-N-R (by the awesome Dali), loaned the traps, given instructions on what to do before and after and allowed to make appointments in advance. The support system at FixNation is just almost too much to believe. They are professional, kind and caring. They answer any questions I have and are willing to help with everything from providing literature that I then used to canvass the neighborhood with, to covers for your traps. All I had to do was JUST DO IT!
I have since trapped 6 cats from my colony, 5 females and 1 male. FixNation has loaned me the traps for another month, as I know there are more cats there but they are now a little more hip and wise to what I am doing. I no longer am just the food lady which is what I would be without FixNation.
