FixNation featured in award-winning documentary, Crazy Cat Lady

‘Crazy Cat Lady’ is a feature-length documentary focused on the feral cat crisis in Los Angeles, and the dedicated – though at times mischaracterized – volunteers who are on the front lines of rescue, TNR (trap, neuter, return), fostering/adoption and more. These same animal-lovers include college professors, young students, CPAs, veterinarians who offer pro-bono services, philanthropists, and well-meaning “cat collectors” -aka-hoarders-aka- “Crazy Cat Ladies” (and gentlemen). There are estimated to be 3,000,000 feral cats in L.A. and due to an injunction that currently prohibits government funding to be utilized for spaying/neutering/feline-population control, the onus is solely on these volunteers [...]

Austin Cats Survive the Storm

The Austin Kitties How Spot, Frodo and Benedict survived the Polar Vortex of 2021 Guest blog by Roxanne Coyne In mid-February, we went through a stretch of at least six days where the temperature never got above freezing at our new home in Austin, Texas. One day it never got above 5F. The cats were freaked out from the moment the first white stuff fell. It snowed and snowed and snowed and it never thawed out.  It got colder and colder, and the snow turned to ice, and then more ice fell on top of the old ice and the entire [...]

Q&A with Visiting Vet, Caitlin Birky

There’s a new pair of hands fixing homeless cats at FixNation! Caitlin grew up in Santa Paula, studied Animal Science at Fresno State and earned a DVM at St. George's University in the Caribbean. She’s now completing her externships and we’re thrilled to have her to help out!   What made you decide to be a vet? Growing up I wasn’t always sure I wanted to be a vet, but I knew I wanted to work with animals, and I really wanted to work with marine mammals like dolphins, sea lions and seals. I was really involved in Future [...]

15 Tips for Caring for Stray Cats this Winter

Feral cats learn from an early age what it takes to survive in the different seasons, but stray cats may suffer quite a bit in extreme weather. Here are some ways to provide extra help during the winter months: Stick with Dry Food Wet food can easily freeze in cold weather! Warm Up Food If you must use wet food, heat it before putting it outside. Warm food doesn’t freeze as quickly as cold food. Use Deep Water Bowls Water has a harder time freezing at greater depths, so use a deep bowl and fill it up. [...]

Los Angeles City Moving Ahead on TNR

At long last the City of L.A. is taking another big step in the effort to end the court injunction against supporting Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) within the city limits. FixNation supporters may recall that the City held a big public hearing back in October 2019 in Highland Park to kick off the effort to prepare the final document to complete the court- and state law-required Environmental Impact Report on the Citywide Cat Program.  That's the proposal put together by the Department of Animal Services to reintroduce TNR to its arsenal of tools to deal with pet overpopulation.  Since then, the City [...]

Spring Cleaning Tips for Cat Lovers!

It's that time of year, when many of us start feeling the urge to fling open the windows and give our homes a thorough spring cleaning. And if you're lucky enough to live with a cat, you might consider these handy kitty-related housecleaning tips: Air out cat beds. After lots of wintertime snuggling, your cat’s bedding needs some freshening. If it’s washable, pop it in on the hot water cycle. If not, sanitize the bed by putting it out in the sun for the day. Ditto for carpeted cat trees. Get in some grooming. Warmer weather means shedding that winter coat. Use [...]

Meet children’s book author Valerie Ingram!

We hope you enjoy this exclusive interview with author and humane educator Valerie Ingram, who recently spoke to us about her latest children’s book, Nobody’s Cats. We love this book and it’s so inspiring. It’s based on a true story? Nobody’s Cats IS based on a true story! It tells the tale of a boy who saw a tiny black cat shivering in the snow by an old shed, one of many that had been born or abandoned there. These kitties were seen as a nuisance and ignored, but the boy in the story stood up for the cats and [...]

4th of July Fireworks and Your Cat

Independence Day is fast approaching, a holiday that many Americans love and most cats detest. The sound of fireworks can be very frightening for animals, particularly cats with their highly sensitive ears. Here are some tips to make the 4th less stressful for everyone: Keep your cat inside the evening of the fireworks. Check windows and flap doors to ensure they are securely closed. If your cat isn’t microchipped, make sure he is wearing a collar with ID tags, just in case your cat escapes, gets scared and runs away. Most cats will hide in a safe place, such as [...]
