A Note from Steve Katz, Colony Caregiver

I’ve always been very lucky with cats.  Every time I didn’t have any cats one would show up, move in and I’d be fine.  A couple of years ago, I was cat-less and what we thought to be a baby bird got lost in our garage. Steve Katz and his cats

Turns out, that was Asti. Orange stripes, estimated age three to four week.  Hand feeding and lots of care, but he made it.

About six months later a little girl stopped by with a kitten that she had found on the street in front of our house.  That kitten was about 5 weeks old, and had a crooked tail so we named him Fiddle Tail. The big cat adopted the little one and again all was fine.  These were our indoor “on the bed” cats. Then even more strays started to appear.  We had all of the house-cats that we wanted but we couldn’t just ignore the other cats.  That’s when I saw a poster for FixNation.  I had a solution that looked like it would work for me and the strays!

I began trapping, neutering and releasing.  The colony has grown to eight cats and they are now chasing any other trespassing cats out of the yard, so things seem to have stabilized.

Steve Katz kissing kitten I must admit that I enjoy them very much.  My wife and I sit on the patio and watch their adventures.  They all have distinct personalities and groups.  Their play is most entertaining.  Then, they go to wherever cats go to sleep.

Most are no longer afraid of us and a few are very friendly.  The good thing is that they haven’t lost their feral nature when it comes to “creatures” who are not members of the colony.  They still run from other people and other animals and seem to know that our yard is safe.  They have even chased a raccoon and a skunk off of the property!

I love cats and enjoy “my colony”.  More important, I don’t have to destroy any of these delightful creatures.  All I have to do is provide food and they provide the rest.  FixNation has made this possible.
