Congratulations to Sandra Lynn who won a free outdoor shelter for their colony cats and a bottle of Feral Flower Essence from FixNation board member Jackson Galaxy’s Spirit Essences line through FixNation’s National Feral Cat Day story competition!
My story with community cats started about three years ago when I was leaving work and I saw a Siamese kitty wet and crying, I noticed that he was left alone when two wild dogs killed his mother in the back of the big parking lot. I built a shelter outside of my office to protect him from cold and other predators. I was feeding him and then an older cat nursed and protected him. These two cats were my first. Then more and more cats were coming for food, at that point I knew that I needed to do something before they become more.
By searching I found online Stay Cat Alliance to find sources to help these kittens and they told me about FixNation.
Since I contacted FixNation, they have helped me so much to prevent more kittens to end up in shelters or on the street. When I started my journey with community cats I never imagined how rewarding and satisfactory is to help cats.
Unfortunately, I have had moments of sadness and disappointments. One of my saddest moments was when I found a young cat with a broken leg, I took her to the vet and unfortunately her leg was so damaged and infected that it needed to be amputated. When I took her to my home to take care of the injury, I immediately had a connection with her and since then Moxie has been part of our family. Moxie has limitations but overall she is a very happy and loving cat; my two Chihuahuas learned fast to respect her and give her space.
Now my community includes 15 cats. They live in the big parking lot outside my office. On my days off I drive 30 miles each way to feed the cats and check on them. But the only thing that I can say is that every time I wake up early, trapping, and go to FixNation is challenging since I do it alone – but it definitely is worth it. Nothing in my entire life has being more satisfactory than help these cats; more than helping them, they have helped me.
