Congratulations to Yvonne Gomez who won a free outdoor shelter for their colony cats and a bottle of Feral Flower Essence from FixNation board member Jackson Galaxy’s Spirit Essences line through FixNation’s National Feral Cat Day story competition!
I have learned so much about my colony’s feral cats; every new experience is amazing.
One day, a new feral male kitty came in to eat. I noticed that he did not have a complete tail. He ate and promptly left, it was dark and I did not notice his full condition at that time.
One day, I saw him come in the morning, I was shocked to notice that he was missing half of his tail. The tail was infected and bleeding, grass and soil were attached creating a hard cover “shell” like around it. It looked to be painful.
I tried to gain his confidence little by little by serving his food separately so that the other feral cats didn’t chase him away. He had such a sweet face and was grateful to get a meal.
One day, I found lots of blood on the concrete floor and the hard “shell” like cover was left on the floor. It seemed that there had been a cat fight.
Later on that night, he came to eat and he was bleeding from his tail, the skin was fully exposed. That was the time that I decided to trap him and get him medical attention.
I finally did trap him, took him to FixNation to be neutered and treatment for his tail condition. I was told that his tail was amputated on the streets and was infected and that he was in a lot of pain. He was neutered and all the infected area had to be removed. He had 4 draining tubes inserted into his tail.
It was a long painful recovery for him, antibiotics and pain medication were needed. He was such a good patient, he understood that it was for his own good.
Today, “Nicholas” has fully recovered. He styles a new stubby tail which he loves to wiggle when he hears music. He was adopted and is loved every day.
