Many thanks to our volunteers at the Day of the Dead Festival

FixNation along with many other individuals, families, and friends descended on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, on Saturday, November 1, to celebrate the ancient tradition and holiday, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This day celebrates and honors beloved ancestors and loved ones lost. In celebration, each year FixNation erects an altar to lost and deceased cats. FixNation’s altar honors departed cats but also allows us to educate the public about our work on behalf of the community cats that are still living among us. In fact, FixNation is responsible for the TNR of a small colony [...]

Happy National Feral Cat Day…from Morgan Fairchild!

Morgan Fairchild Wishes You a Happy National Feral Cat Day! Enjoy her FixNation story...and consider GIVING ONLINE  Happy National Feral Cat Day!  Have you heard my own feral kitty rescue story?  Earlier this year I (Morgan) found a precious cat sunbathing in my backyard. The cat had no collar and I resolved she must be without a home... But she was gentle and became a pleasant visitor, so I began setting out food in my backyard for her to enjoy.  A few weeks later, I found the cat cozied up against the porch...and snuggled-up close to her belly were newborn kittens! [...]

Want to Hear Morgan Fairchild’s FixNation Story?

FixNation is honored by Morgan's friendship and support!  Please read her note below... I'd like to tell you a story of the cats in my life, and how FixNation has helped me.  I have two adopted cats that are 10 years old now, but not long ago I noticed a few cats hanging out in my yard.  I assumed they all had homes because I'd seen a couple of them sitting in the windows of neighbors - and they left when night came.  Slowly it dawned on me that one of them might not have a home, and was indeed a feral cat.  [...]

Architects for Animals event benefiting FixNation

Architects for Animals “Giving Shelter” is an awareness raising initiative. The one-night event in Los Angeles benefitted FixNation, a 501c3 organization dedicated to helping community cats in need. Participating architectural design firms designed, built, and donated creative outdoor shelters. These shelters were on display to the public at a one night event on Wednesday, September 10, at the Herman Miller Showroom in Culver City. FixNation and Architects for Animals offered this unique exhibit and cocktail reception that combines the love of architecture with the love of animals. Attendees enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and wine from the open bar while viewing the original shelter designs. FixNation Board [...]

Gimme Shelter: DIY Cat shelters for community cats

Every cat deserves a warm home, a family to love, a bed to sleep in, and toys to destroy. But as we well know, unfortunately, we live in a world where that’s not always possible. You can still help homeless kitties by building a shelter for those who go without. By building a cat colony refuge, you will help keep community cats safe from predators and outdoor elements. When the weather gets unbearably cold, rainy, or hot, your shelter will offer them much-needed reprieve, promote their health, and give them a secure place to go. You will also be able [...]

Emergency Preparedness: Be ready to take your pets with you

We never think it will happen to us. We actually don’t want to think about it at all. But emergency situations pop up in an instant, all the time. It’s important to be prepared, especially when it comes to your animals, due to the unpredictable and unsettling nature of these changes. During unforeseen and unfortunate times, whether it be a natural disaster or a family emergency, preparing ahead can make your life so much easier. Sadly, all too often history has shown that many pets are abandoned, lost, or harmed simply because no one planned for their continued care. Here [...]

A little black cat named Roscoe

A story from Julio Segovia our Registered Veterinary Technician: I was dropping my daughter, Jaylene, off at daycare. When out of nowhere a friendly black cat approached Jaylene and I. I started petting the little black cat. I walked my daughter into daycare, on the way back to my car the little black cat ran up to me. I opened my car door and he jumped into my car —making himself comfortable! I decided to take him to work with me at FixNation. I knew I could at least scan him for a microchip — in hopes of getting him [...]

Volunteer Allie Johnson Launches a Trap Cover Project

Allie Johnson lives in North Hollywood, by way of Texas and Colorado, but she says Los Angeles was immediately her “heart’s home.”  Allie has been doing cat rescue for more than 50 years but only learned about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) in the last two years ago.  So she was thrilled to learn about FixNation’s services when she received a flyer during community canvassing in North Hollywood at the end of 2013.  She immediately signed up to take the free trap-training course provided by FixNation to learn how to catch and care for the colony of 8 community cats she was nurturing. [...]

Get the “drop” on tough to catch cats

At FixNation we train volunteers and loan hundreds of humane cat traps each year. For most of our kitty clients and their trappers, FixNation’s custom designed Tomahawk trap does the trick. These trigger plate traps are designed to safely capture single cats (or small kittens) who venture in to eat the food bait. However, dedicated trappers can attest – “There always seems to be that one cat.” You know the one, the cautious Tom or the observant momma cat who won’t step near a trap. For these trap-savvy felines, we recommend a drop trap. Drop traps are pretty basic in [...]
