Steve Lockhart | Volunteer of the Month, Jan 2013

Steve Lockhart has been volunteering with FixNation since 2010.  He was chosen as FixNation's January Volunteer of the Month because of his consistent and ongoing support in the clinic, and his willingness to learn new things and take on tasks as needed to keep things moving smoothly. Here's a bit more about Steve in his own words: I'm originally from Northern California and now I live in the NoHo Arts District. I've worked in the entertainment biz for many years. I love cats because their poo is so much smaller than dogs!!!!  I'm kind of an animal person and find [...]

Celebrate National Spay/Neuter Month with FixNation’s 1,000 Cat Challenge

Last year, more than 56,000 dogs and cats entered Los Angeles City shelters. More than 17,000 adoptable, healthy or treatable shelter pets were killed.  The solution is fewer animals into shelters via spay/neuter access and more out via adoption and fostering efforts. The city shelter that receives the highest percentage of CATS annually is the East Valley shelter. As part as Best Friends NKLA (No-Kill LA) initiative, FixNation has taken on the challenge to spay and neuter 1,000 pet cats for FREE from the leading zip codes that contribute to the East Valley Shelter intake volume. Those zip codes are [...]

Feline panleukopenia in feral cat colonies

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a highly contagious parvoviral infection of cats and has a particularly high incidence of disease in feral and stray cat populations. This virus infects all ages of cats and is usually fatal in kittens. Outbreaks of panleukopenia are often associated when there is an increase in populations of kittens , i.e. “kitten season”. The virus is hardy and can persist in the environment for months to years. It is able to withstand extreme heat and is resistant to many disinfectants including Parvosol, Roccal, Triple Two and isopropyl alcohol. FPV primarily targets the immune system and [...]

Remembering Catherine “Cat” Cummings

By: Hilary Stewart Cat Cummings was an extraordinary woman. I only knew her for a little more than 6 years, but she made a deep impact on me, and the multitude of people whose path she crossed. She was a fun, feisty, talented, intelligent, caring, responsible, driven and amazing woman and friend. Cat moved in with me in March, to be closer to UCLA, her doctors, and the clinical trial in which she was involved. In July, I arrived home one night from being on the road for a week, and was hoping to be welcomed by my kitties. Cat [...]

Dia de los Muertos 2012 at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

For the third consecutive year, FixNation was invited to participate in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 27. Ever since we began working with the cemetery to fix their resident cat colony, we have been the only non-profit to have an altar at this increasingly popular event.  With an estimated 20,000 visitors, this year’s celebration smashed previous attendance records, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the amount of visitors we had. Our dedicated volunteers put in long hours through unseasonably blazing sunshine and damp graveyard nights to [...]

Thank you! Girl Scout Troup 462-5

Dear FixNation, As Cadette Girl Scouts, we selected the topic of the importance of spaying/neutering cats and dogs for our Silver Award Take Action Project. We learned about the overcrowding of unwanted animals in shelters, and when they are not adopted, the end result is being euthanized. We wanted people to understand that having your pet spayed or neutered is very important and can be beneficial for you, and for others. We found that paying for the surgeries can be costly if you have multiple pets, and many owners figure that they can easily find homes for the offspring so [...]
