Kitty Call with Greta

January 18, 2011 By Carl Verheyen Soon after we lost our very old cat Elvin to diabetes, my wife suggested we get another cat to ease the grief we all felt. I said, “No, it’s way too soon.” But she insisted on checking out an abandoned stray kitten who had showed up at FixNation, the spay and neuter clinic for homeless stray and feral cats in Los Angeles founded by our friends and neighbors Karn Myers and Mark Dodge. The kitten had been discovered one night in FixNation’s parking lot hiding under an old truck, and she was obviously very [...]

Top 10 Tips for Getting Your Tenacious Trap-Savvy Cat

Some cats just don't seem to want to go into the trap, no matter how hard you try. You've used smelly bait, you've withheld food to get them hungry, and yet you still sit out night after night and come up with an empty trap! Here are the top 10 tips and tricks I've collected over the years that may help you nab your wily kitty: Pray.  Even if you don’t pray...pray. Drink.  Even if you don’t drink...drink. Communicate telepathically with the cat. Even if you don’t believe in communicating telepathically with a cat...send them mental mindwaves to let them know their [...]

The Challenge: Raise $30K in February and Found Animals Will Match It For Us

In honor of Nat'l Spay Neuter Month in February, we have a very exciting challenge! Found Animals and the Heigl Foundation have generously offered to match our donations, dollar for dollar, up to $30,000. So this means if we raise $30K in February, they will match it ($25K from Found Animals and $5K from the Heigl Foundation), for a grand total of $60,000 to FixNation! The two groups are running this donation program for three lucky recipients in the Los Angeles area:  FixNation, Clinico and Spay4LA. Donations must be made before the end of February and they must be made [...]

We Now Accept Credit Cards

We know, it's been a while coming. We've stepped into the modern era. We finally have a merchant account and a credit card machine at our front counter! We are now accepting Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards (sorry, no Amex.) Not only can use your credit or debit card to pay for any services charges at the end of the day, but you can also use your card to make a donation right at our front desk, too. We know how much you are doing for the kitties in your care, and we thank you for it. Hopefully this small [...]

FixNation Celebrates “Day of the Dead” at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday, October 30th

The annual Day of the Dead celebration is an ancient, spiritual tradition that dates back thousands of years to Aztec times. Celebrated in Mexico and widely throughout the Hispanic community, Dia De Los Muertos honors the memories of our ancestors and the beloved souls of friends and family who have passed. It is a time when the veil is lifted between the living and the dead, and the two realms come together in a festive tribute to life, death and rebirth. The largest celebration in the nation is the event at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, LA's oldest memorial park. The annual [...]

The Ultimate Fairy Tale: Meet Prince Scrappy Cat

September 22, 2010 By Melinda Dozal It was my husband who first informed me that there was a "scraggly-looking cat" outside our door early one morning. I immediately ran outside and there he was. A sick, malnourished, skin and bones of a cat who was covered with scabs. It just broke my heart! He looked awful. I immediately gave him some food and water. Since he would let me pet him, scabs and all, I determined at that point that he was a sweet cat. He was not feral. He was a friendly stray who was lost, and had obviously [...]

FixNation Hits a Milestone of over 50,000 Cats Fixed to Date

On August 2, 2010, FixNation hit a major milestone in our history by fixing our 50,000th cat! Our numbers reflect the combined efforts of FixNation since our beginning in 2007, plus includes the cats spayed and neutered through our sister program, Best Friends Catnippers. Give thought for one minute on how many future homeless cats we have collectively prevented by spaying and neutering this many. It's mind-boggling! And yet we still have much more to do... This amazing achievement is a result of the combined effort of hard-working trappers, the caring public, dedicated volunteers, skilled vets and staff, supportive cat rescue [...]
