About: I'm 32 years old, born and raised in Los Angeles. I love to learn, and have been service oriented since my Boys Scout days.  I currently live in Shadow Hills, CA (part of Sunland) in a community full of horses. How many cats do you own? I currently own two cats - Rocky (who looks like a Siamese) and Sammy (who looks like a Russian blue). I'd actually say that they own me - they're just nice enough to let me sleep under the same roof sometimes. I also get to spend time with my girlfriend's two lovely cats Skittles [...]

Let FixNation Help!

At FixNation, our phone is always ringing. It’s a sound we love to hear because it means people care, that cats will be taken care of. One particular call came in about a house that had a momma cat and four kittens roaming around, all unfixed. The owner of the home had started trapping, but didn't know about FixNation. Instead, he was taking the family to the shelter. After the neighbors talked to him, he reached out to us and let us work with him on the problem. It wasn’t just one family; turns out there were many cats around the neighborhood, [...]

Cat safety tips: 8 Things to avoid this Christmas

It’s that special time of the year when we must pay extra attention to the hazards of the holidays when it comes to guaranteeing that our cats remain safe. Decorate your tree, the cat friendly way Christmas tree ornaments and tinsel should be hung at a safe distance away from cats, especially playful kittens. Most ornaments can be lethal to a cat when ingested, especially the little unsuspecting metal hooks that tend to scatter around the base of the tree from fallen and broken ornaments.  So when trimming your tree, make sure to secure ornaments to the branch. Also, in order [...]

Winter Shelter Contest Winners

FixNation continues to deliver free shelters to colony caregivers who submitted the winning stories to our contest in honor of National Feral Cat Day. The shelters were built by FixNation staff and volunteers, lovingly customized with a personal message for the colony, and is accompanied by a bottle of Jackson Galaxy’s Spirit Essences Feral Flower Formula. Even in Los Angeles, where winters are typically mild, managed colonies need refuge from rains and cold temperatures. These simple shelters are providing comfort for community cats and supporting the tireless caregivers who feed and advocate for them every day. Enjoy their stories below. Giving Tuesday $20,000 Matching Gift Challenge

Love cats? You can make a difference on “Giving Tuesday,” December 1st! Help FixNation Meet a $20,000 Matching Gift Challenge “It’s been my practice to share a portion of my good fortune with deserving nonprofits, and of course I thought of FixNation.” This was the opening line of a card we recently received from a long-time volunteer, containing a personal check for $20,000. What’s most remarkable about this out-of-the-blue bequest is that our benefactor is a person of relatively modest means, a retired school administrator who is blessed with a generous spirit and a passion for helping others. The donor also [...]

The Girls of Bell Gardens

by Joe Federico It has long been our practice at FixNation to lend traps and teach people how to use them safely.  Appointments are made to bring in trapped cats for free spay/neuter, vaccines, and medical treatment. But every once in a while there is a case that needs a little more support. A call came in from an 84-year-old woman who lives in the town of Bell Gardens, California. Her 101-year-old mother (that’s right, she’s 101 years old!) had been taking care of a few roaming cats on her property. As it unfortunately happens all too often, those few [...]

Contest Winner: Beloved Niñita (Small Girl)

Congratulations to Victoria Rosales who won a free outdoor shelter for their colony cats and a bottle of Feral Flower Essence from FixNation board member Jackson Galaxy's Spirit Essences line through FixNation’s National Feral Cat Day story competition! I was born in a family of dog people. It was hard since at an early age I discovered cats were my best friends and companions. My mother’s preference was Chihuahuas. I liked all kind of cats. I didn’t care if they were big, small, tall, or fat. The color of yellow, brown or black didn’t matter either. When I grew up I [...]
