Reaching community kids!

Often we're all so focused on working with community cats, we forget the importance of reaching community members, with information on feral cats.  FixNation has outreach programs specifically for public education and on April 12th, 2012, we were focused on community kids! It was a beautiful spring day in L.A. as Dali Colorado and Liz Cava from FixNation traveled to Long Beach to speak to 24 very bright and energetic young children attending a week long humane education camp at the Los Angeles SPCA Humane Education Camp, at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center. Although we can’t [...]

A cat, dog, pig, and a llama walk into…

2013-02-20T15:00:40-08:00 April 25th, 2012|News and Events|

by Dali Colorado On Saturday, April 7th, FixNation had the opportunity to join the annual Blessing of the Animals ceremony at Olvera Street / La Placita in Downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony is held annually, typically on Easter Sunday but also the Saturday prior, and has been a tradition since 1930.  On this beautiful and sunny Saturday, over 2000 people crowded the streets surrounding the Church and Plaza at Olvera Street to celebrate their animals and get them blessed by Cardinal Roger Mahony. This blessing, some believe, will bring their animal’s good health throughout the year. Prior to the Blessing [...]

Miso’s Incredible Journey

by Skylaire Alfvegren Recently, video of a hungry black bear nosing around in the suburban La Crescenta foothills made international news, as the bear turned a corner and startled a man texting his boss about the helicopters, police cars and general commotion outside his home. With three tranquilizer darts, the bear was subdued and released deep in the Angeles National Forest, but his excursion to La Crescenta underscores the fact that the neighborhood plays hosts to coyotes and other wildlife. La Crescenta resident Rob Feldman knows this better than anyone. When his strictly indoor feline Miso accidentally got outside last [...]

Tell St. James Church: Stop Starving Feral Cats!

2012-04-03T15:11:33-07:00 March 18th, 2012|Action Alerts|

It’s been almost two weeks since the eight feral cats that call Manhattan’s historic St. James Church home, have been fed.  That’s because two priests have locked out an animal rescue group that has tended the colony for years in an effort to starve the cats off of church property.  The priests, Father Lino Gonsalves and Father Walter Tonelotto have refused to meet with the rescue group, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals to discuss plans for cat care. Until now, the feral colony at St. James was a model Trap / Neuter / Release (TNR) project, but according to [...]

One Man, One Hundred Cats

Back in March, 2011, Doug Christensen filled out an application for help for the Los Alamitos "racetrack kitties."  Doug was trying to get some help for the cats and kittens at the racetrack.  He estimated there might be as many as 100 cats on site. Doug had done his research and found FixNation, where he learned about our life-based program for stray and homeless cats, which provides free spay/neuter, vaccinations, flea treatment, and eartipping.  Doug attended one of FixNation's free Humane Trap Training Sessions in April 2011, where he received all the tricks of the trade for humanely and safely [...]

Protect Hayden’s Law

2012-04-03T15:16:03-07:00 January 5th, 2012|Action Alerts|

The Hayden Law was passed in California in 1998 and provides the nation's most comprehensive laws to protect shelter animals. Governor Jerry Brown is considering a repeal of a number of provisions of the Hayden Law citing budget concerns. With the Hayden Law, California was at the forefront of animal shelter regulation and many states have been following that lead ever since. Some of the provisions that are subject to repeal would mean permanently reducing the required holding period for animals to 72 hours prior to euthanasia, eliminating the requirement to provide veterinary treatment for shelter animals, and eliminating the [...]

Yuki’s Story of Courage

Camouflaged by darkness, a small black cat limped out from under a fence into the parking area of an industrial site. The site was also the location of a Trap-Neuter-Return project, organized by Best Friends Animal Society.  The homeless and feral cats trapped at this site were bound for FixNation, where the trapped cats would be spayed, neutered, receive rabies and distemper shots and finally eartipped. The chill of Los Angeles winter nights was setting in. The night before, a Momma cat and her two kittens jumped down from a wall separating the site from an apartment complex. Hungry, all [...]
