Read heartwarming stories of cats who have come through our clinic, and the caregivers and volunteers who help to make our work possible.

The Story of Beans, Blanket, and Barney

It all begins with a pregnant community cat who chose what she thought was a safe spot to give birth to her kittens – a large storm drain on an MTA parking lot!  The problem would soon be clear: how could she possibly get these kittens out of this 4 foot deep box, especially with an impending rain forecasted for LA? Enter an extraordinary CATS Inc. foster and trapper who heard about these kittens, and with a little help was able to remove the manhole cover. She descended into the sewer system herself to catch these babies.  Dirty, covered with [...]

Meow, A Real Superhero

You might find this story hard to believe. You might read it and wonder how it can possibly be true that this kind of hero exists, and wonder how the whole world doesn’t know about her yet. We hope to change that just a little by sharing her greatness with our small enclave, and hopefully by inspiring others to become heroes, too. Meet Meow. No, that’s not her real name but that’s what she goes by. Also meet her daughter, who’s nickname is Kitty. About twenty years ago, Kitty told her mom, a single mother, that she had a special [...]

How Some Heroic Firemen Saved Shadow

The heroic firemen of Station 17, located in a hanger within the Burbank Airport, found Shadow earlier this year. Not long after finding her, the firemen noticed Shadow had acquired some horrible burn-type sores across her face and head, perhaps from human abuse or airport chemicals. Shadow wasn’t shy and let the firemen approach her. It was clear she needed immediate care. One fireman knew what to do, and thought immediately of FixNation. FixNation is a non-profit organization that offers low-cost and free care to homeless cats through harm-free catch and release services, spay and neuter treatment, and emergency medical [...]

Why Microchipping Your Cat Is Important

There’s never a dull moment at a spay/neuter cat clinic. We’ve met the best of people, seen kitties with all sorts of personalities, and have had plenty of surprises along the way. But recently we had the pleasure of being a part of a special situation: We were able to reunite a lost cat with his owner.  When one of our volunteers came across a large colony of cats, she decided to try trapping them to be fixed. She was successful, and brought in fourteen felines to be fixed! (Try saying that ten times in a row.) As it turned [...]

Santa brings two kitten sisters home for the holidays

Twas the night before Christmas Eve when all through the house…my phone rang! It was FixNation’s fearless leader, Karn Myers, asking, "Do you have any kittens?" As a foster parent for Cats at the Studios, a local cat rescue group, I responded, “Sure, I always have kittens. Why? What's up?" “Oh, you know, nothing much other than Jay Leno wants to do a Christmas party on the 25th…in two days…and he wants to help cats in the process!” I was not quite sure what this meant but because I trust Karn and am a big Leno fan, I said, "We're in." [...]

Kitten Café: A holiday event with Jay & Mavis Leno

The holidays are a special time of year. Families come together, there’s a cheer in the air, and everybody, even Los Angeles drivers, acts kinder. But some people go out of their way to make the holidays even more memorable, and to weave in a good deed at the same time. Jay Leno is one of those generous people, and we have just the story to prove it: He spent his holidays hosting an intimate dinner for close friends and family…and inviting 18 adorable homeless kittens to join him as well. Most of us know Jay’s enormous comedic talent and [...]

A little black cat named Roscoe

A story from Julio Segovia our Registered Veterinary Technician: I was dropping my daughter, Jaylene, off at daycare. When out of nowhere a friendly black cat approached Jaylene and I. I started petting the little black cat. I walked my daughter into daycare, on the way back to my car the little black cat ran up to me. I opened my car door and he jumped into my car —making himself comfortable! I decided to take him to work with me at FixNation. I knew I could at least scan him for a microchip — in hopes of getting him [...]

Volunteer Allie Johnson Launches a Trap Cover Project

Allie Johnson lives in North Hollywood, by way of Texas and Colorado, but she says Los Angeles was immediately her “heart’s home.”  Allie has been doing cat rescue for more than 50 years but only learned about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) in the last two years ago.  So she was thrilled to learn about FixNation’s services when she received a flyer during community canvassing in North Hollywood at the end of 2013.  She immediately signed up to take the free trap-training course provided by FixNation to learn how to catch and care for the colony of 8 community cats she was nurturing. [...]

Carol Long | Volunteer of the Month, Mar 2014

Name: Carol Long Neighborhood: Burbank, California About: I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, lived for three years in South Texas, and then moved to California in the late 1980's. My first exposure to animal rescue came when I worked the hotline for Best Friends, responding to calls from the Los Angeles area. Some of the most frustrating calls came from people who had come across colonies of many stray, sick, starving cats, and were looking for quick and easy answers to finding them all a good happy home. My frustration over not being able to provide services which would even [...]

Leslie Cordaro | Volunteer of the Month, Feb 2014

Name: Leslie Cordaro City and neighborhood: I moved from a small town in Pennsylvania to Van Nuys, CA in 1985. About: I transferred from Pennsylvania to Sun Valley, CA as a mail carrier. Once here I was rescuing dogs on my mail route and my coworker’s routes. Then one day on my route I heard kittens crying. I walked up to the vacant house and found two very small kittens that somehow had been separated from their mother. I put them in my mail satchel and took them to a lady on my route that I knew was involved with cats. [...]
