A Note from Steve Katz, Colony Caregiver

I’ve always been very lucky with cats.  Every time I didn’t have any cats one would show up, move in and I’d be fine.  A couple of years ago, I was cat-less and what we thought to be a baby bird got lost in our garage. About six months later a little girl stopped by with a kitten that she had found on the street in front of our house.  That kitten was about 5 weeks old, and [...]

JUST DO IT! By Gail Colby, Community Cat Caretaker

Hi, my name is Gail Colby. I used to work on a dead-end street in a commercial district in Van Nuys, next to a large TV studio, surrounded by a residential area. At first, I started seeing cats in the parking lot, mostly sick and dying. I decided that I could do something to help them, even if it was to just prevent starvation. I started to put food out whenever I saw a cat. Initially, I got some resistance from people I worked with, so I started to feed the cats in a corner where no one would see [...]

Star Eco Station’s Children’s Earth Day

We were invited to participate in Star Eco Station’s Children’s Earth Day on April 21, 2013 in Culver City.  This was their 13th year celebrating Earth Day with a special emphasis on children and what they could do to help live a more “green” lifestyle and protect the earth and it’s resources.  There were children of all ages enjoying the festivities and the beautiful day. Our booth’s banner of kittens and cats brought many smiling faces inquiring as to our services.  We took appointments, handed out fliers and spoke to them about the importance of having our pets spayed and [...]

Jerry Shaia | Volunteer of the Month, Mar 2013

I'm 46, have a studio apartment, a bad attitude and 3 cats. I grew up on a horse ranch in Montana, but have been in LA since '85, when i moved out here to go to college. I worked in the music industry as a writer for a trade mag for ten years, and recently have had the opportunity to start writing again for an online music magazine. I've played in a couple punk bands, and actually got paid as a professional musician, which was kind of strange. I love horror movies, punk, metal, slam dancing and exercise. And I've [...]
