Random Act of Kindness: Karen Olvera

Karen Olvera was recently in the FixNation lobby when she did something. Something all of us will applaud, but not all of us are prepared to stand up and do in the moment. Karen is a new client of FixNation who is tremendously happy to learn of the resources and services provided by FixNation. She recently completed TNR training and was picking up two of the three kittens that live under her house from their spay/neuter appointment one afternoon last week. As she was standing in the lobby, she over heard our receptionist speaking with a gentleman over the phone [...]

1.       Name – Patty Peirce 2.       City and neighborhood? North Hollywood California, originally from Tucson, Az. 3.       Years volunteering at FN? 5 years, since shortly after the clinic FixNation Clinic opened at it’s current location at 7680 Clybourn Ave., Los Angeles CA, 91352. 4.       What brought you to want to volunteer for FN? I needed to get my job’s property cats fixed. I took them to a regular vet and it cost too much to get them fixed there. Someone told us about FixNation, so we contacted them and were able to receive both TNR training and borrow humane traps. I was shown how to use the traps [...]

A Note from Steve Katz, Colony Caregiver

I’ve always been very lucky with cats.  Every time I didn’t have any cats one would show up, move in and I’d be fine.  A couple of years ago, I was cat-less and what we thought to be a baby bird got lost in our garage. Turns out, that was Asti. Orange stripes, estimated age three to four week.  Hand feeding and lots of care, but he made it. About six months later a little girl stopped by with a kitten that she had found on the street in front of our house.  That kitten was about 5 weeks old, and [...]

Jerry Shaia | Volunteer of the Month, Mar 2013

I'm 46, have a studio apartment, a bad attitude and 3 cats. I grew up on a horse ranch in Montana, but have been in LA since '85, when i moved out here to go to college. I worked in the music industry as a writer for a trade mag for ten years, and recently have had the opportunity to start writing again for an online music magazine. I've played in a couple punk bands, and actually got paid as a professional musician, which was kind of strange. I love horror movies, punk, metal, slam dancing and exercise. And I've [...]

Steve Lockhart | Volunteer of the Month, Jan 2013

Steve Lockhart has been volunteering with FixNation since 2010.  He was chosen as FixNation's January Volunteer of the Month because of his consistent and ongoing support in the clinic, and his willingness to learn new things and take on tasks as needed to keep things moving smoothly. Here's a bit more about Steve in his own words: I'm originally from Northern California and now I live in the NoHo Arts District. I've worked in the entertainment biz for many years. Remembering Catherine “Cat” Cummings

By: Hilary Stewart Cat Cummings was an extraordinary woman. I only knew her for a little more than 6 years, but she made a deep impact on me, and the multitude of people whose path she crossed. She was a fun, feisty, talented, intelligent, caring, responsible, driven and amazing woman and friend. Cat moved in with me in March, to be closer to UCLA, her doctors, and the clinical trial in which she was involved. In July, I arrived home one night from being on the road for a week, and was hoping to be welcomed by my kitties. Cat [...]

Thank you! Girl Scout Troup 462-5

Dear FixNation, As Cadette Girl Scouts, we selected the topic of the importance of spaying/neutering cats and dogs for our Silver Award Take Action Project. We learned about the overcrowding of unwanted animals in shelters, and when they are not adopted, the end result is being euthanized. We wanted people to understand that having your pet spayed or neutered is very important and can be beneficial for you, and for others. We found that paying for the surgeries can be costly if you have multiple pets, and many owners figure that they can easily find homes for the offspring so [...]

Miso’s Incredible Journey

by Skylaire Alfvegren Recently, video of a hungry black bear nosing around in the suburban La Crescenta foothills made international news, as the bear turned a corner and startled a man texting his boss about the helicopters, police cars and general commotion outside his home. With three tranquilizer darts, the bear was subdued and released deep in the Angeles National Forest, but his excursion to La Crescenta underscores the fact that the neighborhood plays hosts to coyotes and other wildlife. La Crescenta resident Rob Feldman knows this better than anyone. When his strictly indoor feline Miso accidentally got outside last [...]
